Proofreading, Editing or Both?

Please note the following descriptions, which should help you to choose which service you require - proofreading, editing or both.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the process of correcting errors in the grammar, spelling and punctuation of written text. It also includes the correction of errors in spacing and formatting. A written text includes anything from a magazine article to the text on packaging, from a university dissertation to a novel, from an instruction handbook to the text on a DVD cover. A proofread text is not only easier to read, it also helps to present a more professional image of the author of the text.

Proofreading work on your text will include formatting, grammar (including conjunctions, adverb placement, prepositions and the correction of split infinitives, etc.), spelling, tenses, correction of run-on sentences, paragraphing and punctuation, etc.

Editing

Editing is rather more complex than proofreading. Editing can include the complete rewriting of a sentence, a paragraph or a whole section of a text, the cutting of part of the text or the complete restructuring of the text. It may also include a suggestion to the author to expand or rewrite part of the text. A good editor always reads a text with several questions permanently in mind: does the text need to be restructured? Does part of the text need to be rewritten, expanded or cut? Is the meaning of the text clear? These questions are all part of one concern: can this text be understood by the reader?

An editor acts as a second opinion for a writer; no matter how good a writer is, it is always useful to have a written work assessed by at least one other person. Editing work on your text will include the use of appropriate academic language for academic work, structure, improvements in style, correction of footnotes, references and bibliographies for academic work, suggested expansion of parts of the text, suggested rewriting and cutting of text, etc.
